Nikolai Gorlov was born in 1917 in Omsk. Childhood and early adolescence of the future artist were in the orphanage, and in 1934 he was working in the commune of Lyubertsy F.Dzerzhinskogo name, where he was in an art studio. There often came and gave lessons in drawing one of the most important representatives of the Soviet easel painting of the 1930s, Boris Johanson, who noted a talented young man and encouraged him to study seriously.
In 1937 the director of the Art Institute, the famous artist Igor Grabar visited the Dzerzhinsky Commune, and acquainted with the works of Gorlov, enrolled him without examination to the second year of the Surikov Institute. His thesis, "Storming of the Winter Palace" N.Gorlov wrote in 1942 under the leadership of Grabar, who praised the efforts of students, recognizing his work "an extraordinary phenomenon." As early as next year, 1943, Gorlov was admitted to the Union of Artists. The same age as the revolution, the man with the "classical" Soviet biography, throat, and official recognition of the artistic community was his works on the revolutionary theme.
