Why do not you address a letter and photographs of paintings in the Hermitage itself ? At the time of Nicholas I, there are many paintings were sold to private owners as allegedly "excessive" (according to the Emperor ). Then they were long, up to date redeemed back to the Hermitage collection , and not all go back.
