I wonder ... I always thought that this law was prolobirovan order to avoid paying import duties for the painting, bought for big money at Western auctions.

But I suspect that this may result in case of smuggling. In general, what would you want with minimal cost, but without the crime.

I'm always fighting with customs, so that I can give you expert advice. You have the right to import goods purchased by you in two ways - first by declaring them as cultural values. And then - call an expert, photos, etc.
The second way - just like goods. If the amount you spent to buy them for less than the permitted duty-free entry, then you can formally take the path of tacit declaration and really go through the green corridor, but then you get ready to talk to customs officials who are determined that you are a crook, and they themselves need money - that is, they will judge you by looking at yourself.
So, my advice - declare your bronze and so on, as goods, even if they cost 500 euros and go through the red corridor. Customs asks you why you do declare. Answer me that you may declare even his own bald head, and customs is a matter of right to assess whether you have declared, and whether it is subject to customs clearance. You are restrained immediately and after a couple of such attempts would be the sight of you, quickly go the other way. Just be sure to keep all invoices, catalogs, etc.
