Van Dogen studied painting at the Rotterdam School of Fine Arts and the School of Applied Arts. After moving to Paris in 1900, he received French citizenship in 1929, and died in Monaco in 1968
In the years 1905-1906 van Dogen became friends with Camille Pissarro, although it was not so much fascinated by Impressionism, but still occasionally went with Pizarro in the Circus Medrano, where did sketches of clowns and acrobats.

In these same years he exhibited his paintings in the Salon d'Automne with such artists as Dera, Vlamik, Friesz, Marquet, Rouault, and where the word Fauvism went down in history of art. In 1913, one of the works of Van Dogena, large picture of a naked woman, was torn from the wall of the police (other istochnikam it was an accident, the film struck, she fell off).
