In Byzantine and ancient Russian religious art was popular image of the Virgin and Child with Oranta Christ in the iconography of Emanuel (Hebrews - God with us - one of the prophetic name of God the Son, used in the prophecy of Isaiah (Is. VII, 14), represents Christ the servant). Typically, Christ is depicted in a circular medallion, or perhaps a little (transparent) at the mother's breast. In the Russian tradition, this type of iconography was special naming - "Omen". The main purpose of the icons of the Sign shifted from mediation intercessory prayer to the Virgin Orans Incarnation of Christ.
