Pavel was born Shillingovsky 15 (27) January 1881 in Kishinev. He studied at the Art School of the Odessa Society of Fine Arts in KC Kostandi and GA Ladyzhenskaya. Graduated from Art School at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg (1901-1914), where he studied first at the beautiful studio of DN Kardovsky, and then - in the studio of renowned masters of engraving, VV Mate. He taught at the Higher Artistic-Technical Institute (VHUTEIN), then transformed into the Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. IE Repin (1921-1929, 1935-1937). artist died of starvation in the siege of Leningrad in April 1942.
PA Shillingovsky worked in etchings, linocuts, but the artist's favorite technique was the woodcut. It is the technique of wood engraving was created by the best works of masters of national classics of graphic art.
The exhibition will present a retrospective of the fortress of creativity PA Shillingovsky. The exhibition will be shown first engraving by the artist on the tree, "Mountain Landscape with trees" (1917) of the 1920-1930 - lists of the series "Bakhchisarai", "Erevan", "Kazan", "Old Armenia"; bookplates, book graphics. In particular, for the first time will be exhibited preparatory drawings for the book of Homer's "Odyssey" and drawings for an unpublished book by Dante Alighieri "Divine Comedy" in the translation of DE Mina, as well as portraits of the IV Stalin and VI Lenin.
The centerpiece of the exhibition will take a series of etchings in 1921 and 1941's, dedicated to St. Petersburg. Created during the Civil War and World Wars, during the most difficult test for our city, these works sounded like a hymn to St. Petersburg.
Three years (1921-1923) worked to create Shillingovsky album of engravings, "St. Petersburg. Ruins and revival. " In the summer of 1923 in the department of Polygraphic Academy of Arts, the album was printed in 500 numbered copies, it consists of 10 woodcuts. All 10 pages Albums can be seen in the exhibition. As a preparatory material he created numerous drawings and watercolors 25 sheets combined in series with the ambiguous title "The ruins of the revolution." In St. Petersburg GMI kept the entire collection of watercolors in the series, and the first time she will be fully represented in the exhibition.
A series of etchings in 1941 - "Besieged City" - was the last work Shillingovsky. Above her, he worked in 1941-1942 in besieged Leningrad. Because of the death of the artist, this work remained unfinished. The exhibition will be exhibited preparatory drawings and seven prints from this series.
The exhibition State History Museum of St. Petersburg released a reprint of the album PA Shillingovsky "St. Petersburg. Ruins and revival. " Presentation of the album took place at the show September 6, 2011.
