American restorer named Marco Grassi received for clearing the heavily impacted by the time the picture by an unknown artist XVI century and found that it was written in about 1530 portrait of Erasmus of Rotterdam, the brush of Hans Holbein the Younger. Rotterdam Museum Boijmans - van Beuningen already included a picture in the exhibition "Portraits of Erasmus," reports The Art Newspaper. Ibid 23 January 2009 will be a symposium of specialists on Holbein, who will try to come to a consensus regarding the identification of the picture.
The newly discovered portrait of Erasmus has similarities with the analogues, now stored in Basel and London, as well as some differences, which may indicate that the picture painted a pupil or follower of Holbein.
Zurich collector, owner of the newly discovered portrait by Holbein the Younger purchased it at auction in Paris house Drouot-Richelieu in September 2000 for two thousand euros.
