This refers to the first edition of "The Queen of Spades" with illustrations by Benoit, undertaken in 1911 by a partnership Golike R. and A. Vilborg. Then she dvadzhy reprinted.

The Queen of Spades "with drawings by Alexander Benois - the famous and the best in the history of domestic book publishing publishing the novel by Alexander Pushkin, vypushennoe typography suppliers of the Imperial Household partnership Golike R. and A. Vilborg and printed on high quality laid paper, hand-made. The publication is decorated outstanding artist-watercolorist, art critic Alexander Nikolayevich Benois (1870-1960), creator and mastermind of the famous art of World of Art ". Contemporaries saw him as a living embodiment of the spirit of artistry.

 His aesthetic and artistic tastes are shaped by opposition to the realistic and the academic traditions of Russian art. In his work, Alexander Benois inspired by French art of the XVIII century, the old kinds of Versailles and St. Petersburg. It is here that lie the origins of a bold reassessment of artistic aesthetics, which is one of the greatest achievements of the World of Art ". Great importance in the formation of artistic representations of A. Benoit had a passion for theater and the genre of drama, one of the most striking expressions which have become the staging of "The Queen of Spades" by A. Pushkin. Attempts at creating illustrations for this story by Benoit has made more in 1898 and then in 1905 and 1910 created a whole series of drawings. Specific features illyustratorskogo talent Benoit had the force of his imagination, the ability to convey the spirit of the era depicted.

 The illustrations for "The Queen of Spades" best reflect the artist's quest, his desire to develop principles of book design. "Architectonics" of the book carefully thought out. The text is framed by ornamental frames composing, stylized, like the font for the publication of Pushkin's time. Each chapter is decorated with individual shmutstitulom and has a single page graphic, intro and ending, executed in color. The decoration of the book creates a feeling of organic unity of all its elements. Therein lies its unique aesthetics. The illustrations for "The Queen of Spades" by A. Benoit reflected an understanding by the artist creativity of Pushkin and his era, while at the same time a bright sense of modernity. The publication in 1911 were published the illustrations for "The Queen of Spades" second "series", made Benoit a year before.
