January 26, 1904 Japanese fleet of six cruisers and eight destroyers went to the Gulf Chemulpo and stopped at the outer roads: on the inner roads at that time were Russian ships - the cruiser Varyag and seaworthy gunboat "Korean" as well as cargo and passenger steamer "Songhua River." Stood as foreign warships.
Early in the morning on Jan. 27, 1904 VF Rudnev received an ultimatum to the Japanese Rear Admiral S. Uriu with the requirement to leave the Chemulpo to 12 hours of the day, otherwise the Japanese threatened to open fire on Russian ships in a neutral port, which was a flagrant violation of international law.
VF Rudnev crew announced that Japan started military actions against Russia. Varyag weighed anchor and headed for the exit of the bay. In the wake of the gunboat was "Korean" (commander captain 2 rank G. Belyaev). The ships broke through the military alert.
Most likely, the painting depicts Russian gunboats during the Russian-Japanese War.
