The first product, refer to his general account, has been exhibited in the Salon in 1847 painting "Young Greeks amuse cock fighting" (located in the Luxembourg Museum). Behind her was followed by: "Anacreon, causing the dance to Bacchus and Cupid" (1848) and "Greek lupanar" (1851) - a scene which has already clearly expressed one of the main features of the multi-talent artist, namely, its ability to mitigate the seduction scene strict processing forms and as if cold attitude to what can arouse in the spectator sensuality. A similar ambiguous picture of the artist appeared in the cabin in 1853 under the innocent title "Idyll". All of these play Greek life, thanks to the original view of the artist and her mastery of his art made him the leader of a special group among the French painters - a group of so-called. "Neogrekov.
He wrote in 1855 painting "Augustan age", with figures at full size, can only be regarded as an unsuccessful trip to the region of historical painting in the strict sense. Incomparably greater success had the "Russian soldiers peselniki" - a scene written by sketches made during his visit Jerome, in 1854, through Russia to Moldavia. Better yet his highly dramatic "Duel after the Masquerade" (1857) and appeared after the artist's trip to the shores of the Nile "Egyptian recruits, escorted by Albanian soldiers in the Desert" (1861). Sharing the way its activities between East, West and classical antiquity, Jerome reaped, however, the most abundant laurels of the latter. From it are drawn to his stories have become world-famous paintings: "The murder of Caesar," "King Kandavl shows his beautiful wife, Gigesu", "Gladiators in the circus greeted Emperor Vitellius," "Phryne before the Areopagus" (1861), "Augur," " Cleopatra, Caesar, "and some others. Increasing these works his already the notoriety, he turned on some time back to the life of the modern East and wrote the picture: "Transportation of the captive on the Nile" (1863), "Turkish butchers in Jerusalem", "Alma", "Workers on the prayer (1865), "The Tower of Al-Essaneyn, with exposed her heads of executed bey" (1866) and "Arnaut, playing chess" (1867), sometimes he was taken as a theme of French history, what, eg " Louis XIV and Moliere "(1863)," Acceptance of the Siamese embassy of Napoleon "(1865) and" December 7, 1815 (death of Marshal Macdonald).
Beginning with the 1870's., Creativity Jerome noticeably weaker, so that over the last decades of the XIX century, you can specify only three of his works, it is worthy of his earlier acquired reputations: «Rex Tibicen» (Frederick the Great, 1874), "Grey Eminence" (1874) and "Muslim monk at the door of the mosque" (1876). Across the eastern genres famous artist strikes a graceful and faithful transmission of climate, terrain, folk styles and the slightest particular domestic situation, he studied at repeated visits to Egypt and Palestine, while at the same time, in his paintings of classical antiquity can be seen not so much the Greeks and Romans, How many people of recent times, of French and French, performing in naughty scenes in ancient costumes and among antique accessories. Picture of Jerome - perfectly-correct and worked out all the details, the letter - careful, do not dry; flavor - not brilliant, somewhat gray, but very harmonious, especially masterful artist of light. In the last decades of the XIX century, he also tried his hand at sculpture. Visitors to the Paris World Fair in 1878 stopped its attention on two groups fashioned them: "Gladiator" and "Anacreon with Bacchus and Cupid."
Died, Jean-Leon Gerome January 10, 1904 in Paris.
