Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky was born to a bankrupt merchant, an Armenian by nationality. He spent his childhood in poverty, but the boy's talent was spotted, he was helped. Something he learned from a local architect, and then in the Simferopol gymnasium, where he showed such progress in drawing that influential people in 1833, the escalation of its entry into the Academy of Fine Arts. He studied at the landscape MN Vorobyov, but their interests did not immediately determined. Crucial role played by the arrival in St. Petersburg Frenchman F. In 1837, two new works ("Calm on the Gulf" and "The Great Roads at Kronstadt"), he received a gold medal and title of the artist. In the spring of 1838 Aivazovsky returned to Theodosia, where he made him the studio and started working. Gaining experience, then wrote mainly from nature, but only in the studio finishing the job.
1840-44 years. Aivazovsky as a foreign retiree Academy of Arts held in Italy, and visited Germany, France, Spain, Holland, fruitful work, has exhibited his work, and everywhere was a success. After his return has received the title of academician of the Academy of Fine Arts and was attached to the Naval Staff. This allowed him the next year, along with the Expedition Russian explorer and geographer Litke to visit Turkey, Greece, Asia Minor and gain new experiences.
