The Museum of Russian Icons is an initiative of philanthropist and businessman Mikhail Yurevich Abramov and is currently the largest private collection of monuments of Orthodox culture. The museum collection was formed by the early 2000's. and now includes nearly 4,000 monuments of Old Russian and Eastern Christian art (including about 600 Russian icons).
Museum of Russian Icons was opened in 2006, was originally a permanent exhibition of the museum was located in the Moscow business center Vereiskaya Plaza. Fans of ancient art to see the museum collection at the State Tretyakov Gallery (exhibition "Return of property", 2008), the Pushkin Museum. AS Pushkin (the exhibition "Masterpieces of Russian iconography XIV-XVI Centuries from Private Collections", 2009), in the halls of other museums in Moscow, as well as in overseas exhibitions.
 Prominent place in the museum occupy the ancient icons XIV-XVII centuries, created the biggest iconic centers of Russia. Among the significant items should be noted only subscription icon of the Virgin Hodigitria, the authorship of which belongs to the royal icon painter, Simon Ushakov, an icon of St. Nicholas of Myra (XIV century, Arkhangelsk region), the largest of being in a private collection, a collection of Pskov icons of XVI century, as well as the iconostasis end of the XVII century (Northern Greece) with icons of XVI - XVIII centuries. The museum is represented Old Believer chapel bespopovskogo consent, the middle of the XIX century (Tver region). The Museum has a rare collection of objects of Byzantine arts VI-XIV centuries, including crosses, vest and processional crosses. Of particular value is owned by the museum a unique, very large scale in Russia, a collection of Ethiopian art, numbering more than 2400 items. The museum's collection of Russian icons there priority to a certain degree of occupational museum's founder MY Abramova, working in construction - is the icon with an architectural background with images of Russian saints with based their abodes.
The new premises of the Museum of Russian Icons was created through the merger of two mansions on the potter's street, the total area of the museum is 2500 square meters. pm in the Museum created the conditions for scientific, social and educational activities: a beautiful equipped conference room, collected a large library, a recreated workshop of icon painter, help to illustrate the process of writing an icon. The Museum is constantly working with leading experts in the field of Old Russian and Eastern Christian art. With works of art coming into the collection of the museum, conservators are working best. Since its inception, the Museum of Russian icons is a planned search operation in Russia and abroad, aimed at finding traces of the old Russian collections, as well as to identify and return to Russia of the monuments of Orthodox art.
The museum will conduct an active outreach and educational activities. By the opening of the museum released to coincide with the first volume of the catalog, including works of ancient Christian art in the museum's collection.
The accumulated experience of the Museum of Russian icons of the major exhibition projects showed that interest in the Orthodox culture, to its unique monuments huge.
