Grigoryan was born in g.Kropotkin, Russia, an Armenian family who immigrated to Iran in 1930.
After high school in Iran, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome. In 1954 he returned to Iran, opened the «Galerie» in Tehran.
In 1958, under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture, he organized the first Tehran Biennial. Grigorian was an influential teacher at the Academy of Fine Arts, where he extended his passion for local pop culture.
In 1975 Grigorian organized a group of free painters and sculptors in Tehran and was one of its founding members.
Grigorian had left Iran in 1977 at the age of 52 years. He spent some time in the United States before moving to Yerevan. In 1989 he traveled to Russia at the invitation of the Union of Artists of Russia, visited Moscow and Leningrad.
He has exhibited his work in Yerevan in 1991. Later, he donated 5,000 of his works to the Government of Armenia.
Some of his works currently on display at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art, Museum of Contemporary Art in Kerman, as well as the National Gallery of Armenia.
Tragically passed away on August 27, 2007 in Yerevan, at the age of 82.
