Central Sumy Museums - Local History and Art - are reading history since 1920, when in Sumy was founded by artistic-historical museum. Since then, the art collection of local history and attractions not made us so completely. Then the museum occupies three buildings on the present Cathedral (which until today have not survived), and exhibited about 60 percent of the thousands of collection (compare: Today Art Museum in the exhibition represented only about 6 percent of the fifteen thousandth collections, the exhibition of local lore - about 15%of the forty five thousand exhibits).
However, the exact amount of funds before the war museum is not known - during the Great Patriotic War not only killed many of the exhibits, but also documentation. This is especially true museum: if about 3 thousand of the most valuable objects from the collections of Museum of Art was evacuated to the rear, the homeland has remained in Sumy. First, in the Museum (March 15, 1939, they formally separated, but continued to exist in some walls) got a German bomb. Something, of course, managed to save - and the miraculous icon of the Korsun Mother of God (recently stolen from the Cathedral of the Transfiguration, and before exhibited in the museum) and has not received a scratch! During the occupation of the city museums (more precisely, the two exhibitions: "Ukrainian Folk Art" and "Department of Nature") continued to work in another building on ul.Nikolaevskaya (now at this location hotel "Sumi"). But when the Germans retreated, they looted art collection, and what is not taken - was burned. Survived mostly items that are not represented in the exhibition.
