The material for the beginning of the museum served as a collection of modern art, which was collected in 80-90-ies "unofficial" artists, and representing the non-conformist art of Leningrad-Petersburg of second half of the twentieth century.
From 1998 to 2003 the Museum of Nonconformist Art was held 40 exhibitions, issued 30 catalogs and brochures, created an archive with more than 1,000 items, including, among other facilities, a unique collection of videos on digital media for exhibitions and cultural actions, held in St. Petersburg for the past 14 years.
The museum is actively cooperating with the leading exhibition venues and museums in our city: the Hermitage, the State Russian Museum, the Museum of the History of St. Petersburg and others
In 2002, started a large project to submit museum collections of university museums in the U.S. for up to two years.
To the 300 anniversary of St. Petersburg Museum staff developed a draft of the "Festival of Nonconformist Art", which will be brought to the museum's collection, as well as the history of motion of non-conformist artists to educate the wider St. Petersburg, guests of the northern capital, as well as specialists in the field of art and history. The project arose from the need to fill a gap in contemporary art criticism and link times of the existence of Russian Avant-Garde 1910-1920 period with the art of the second half of the twentieth century, torn invasion of the Soviet ideology in the art.
