Born in Yerevan in 1926
 In 1945. Graduated from the Yerevan Art College. F. Terlemezian.
He studied at the Yerevan Institute of Fine Arts (1945-1951) in A. Bekaryan, E. Isabekian.
In 1953. admitted to the Union of Artists of the Armenian SSR and elected a board member of the Union of Artists.
In 1961. Gregory Handzhyanu awarded the title of Honored Artist of the Armenian SSR, in 1962. He was elected a corresponding member of USSR Academy of Arts, in 1963. G. Khanjian - Honored Artist of the Armenian SSR and board member of Union of Artists.
1967. - Awarded the title People's Artist of Armenian SSR, 1969. - USSR State Prize for his illustrations for the poem Paruyr Sevak "tolling bell, 1973. - Elected a member of the USSR Academy of Arts 1975. - Elected deputy of the Supreme Council and a member of the Presidium of the Supreme Council of the Armenian SSR 1982. - Elected member of the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR 1983. - Awarded the title of People's Artist of the USSR.

Gregory Khanjian one of the masters of fine arts in Armenia. It is widely known as a painter, book illustrator and designer of large-scale tapestries on historical themes.

Reproducing in its best traditions of Armenian art, his work addresses Khanjian multinational audience. Creativity Charetns known and loved far beyond the borders of Armenia. It works - an indicator of high art of our days.

By means of its illustrations for the novel "The Wounds of Armenia" (1959) Khachatur Abovian, for the poem "The tolling bell" (1968) Paruyr Sevak and through sketches for tapestries on a historical theme: "Vardananks" and "Armenian Alphabet" (1981), the artist sought how to establish a dialogue with the audience, to awaken in him memories and emotions, to present high ideals.

Art Gregory began his career as a painter. His canvases and the first illustrations for books of Armenian writers and poets have shown a tendency of the artist to lyricism and love for detail. In later works Charetns History of Armenia becomes the main subject of his art.

Presentation of historical events of his native people took place in the consciousness of the artist gradually becoming a full and complete only with the years. His interpretation of historical topics has become clear in the illustrations for the novel Abovyan "Wounds of Armenia", in his view of the tragic events described in the book, people involved in those events and the main character, leading the people. In black and white pages, business and nature of Agasi, the main hero of the novel, presented with romance and inspiration.

Illustrations highlighting another aspect of the history of Armenia, made for Handzhyanom Sevak's poem "tolling bell." The central figure of the poem - the composer Komitas, its main theme - the history of life and death of the composer. Komitas went with his people all the horrors of the Armenian Genocide in Turkey in 1915. That is the fate of the great composer Komitas inspired the artist to create these works. Poem, illustrated Handzhyanom became required reading in every Armenian family. Illustrations of the artist to help save the reader a vivid image of the hero and show his own attitude to these tragic events.

In the sketches for tapestries Charetns also depicted the events of the Armenian history: the scene of the battle with the Persians 451 years, led by Prince Vardan Mamikonyan and the creation of the Armenian alphabet Mesrop Mashtots in 405.

Culture Italian, Spanish and Mexican peoples, which was closely acquainted Khanjian during travel to those countries, became the subject of a series of new works by the artist, which feels a passion and sincerity inherent in these countries.

Since the mid seventies, still lifes are the main theme of Khanjian.
The passion of the artist to folk art is also evident in the many still-life painter. Khanjian wanted his work to promote the revival of traditional crafts of the Armenian people.

April 18, 2000 in Yerevan on the 74th, died a great Armenian artist, member of USSR Academy of Arts, a member of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia, the national artist of USSR, State Prize winner - Gregory Khanjian.
