"The severe style" - the artistic direction in Soviet art, which emerged during the second half of 1950. The golden age of "severe style" was at the end of 50-s-early 60-ies, with the establishment of the most striking examples of this trend. However, in general, the artistic features of this style reminded of them during the 60's and even early 70's.
At the core remained plot-thematic painting, in which the realistic presentation of reality, more and more replaced by the creation of some plastic characters, typecasting, images, free heroes of socialist labor for which labor has become a matter of honor and heroism "
(B. Nikiforov. Soviet artists - 40 anniversary of the October .- "Art", 1957, № 8).
Artists working in this style, was interested in energy, will, the dramatic fate of their contemporaries. "The sense of social responsibility is reflected in them, just through the consistent adoption of the harsh and demanding and dramatic conception of life. The main hero of the new film was a person who passes through itself the contradictions and problems of life that gives her the energy of the individual, the full force of physical and mental" (AI Morozov. Generations of young people. M., 1989, p.21).
Style characterized monumentalizirovannoy composition, generalized concise form, large color spots. "Poluploskostnaya system of painting brought a new compositional and figurative solutions: the rejection of narrative and psychologically developed plot, highlight the desire for fragmentation and monumentalizatsii image to the graphics and color expressive silhouette. ... The man in the picture becomes inactive, reserved and reflective. Such an interpretation image of Soviet man was seen as a polemical antithesis of pompous canvases, where the only sign of the human condition was a happy smile "(G. Konyakhin. Ways of young painters .-" Art ", 1965, № 7).
Tair Salakhov: "... it is necessary sometimes for the sake of truth in art to abandon the blind imitation of nature, aside from the particulars for the sake of the integrity of the image. It is the way I wanted to go, creating a picture of" Morning train. ... Painting is our must learn to speak in concise language Mayakovsky. " (The exhibition "40 years of the Komsomol." Said the young artists .- "Art", 1958, № 10).
