Hagop Markarovich [5 (17). 12. 1881, Shusha, Nagorno-Karabakh now AO - 28. 12. 1948, Paris], Armenian sculptor. He studied in Paris at the Académie Julian (1906-10), attended the studio of A. Rodin. From 1914 he worked in Moscow since 1921 - in Paris. In the work of G. intricately mixed features of the ancient art of Oriental and modern Western European tendencies. Among his best works: portraits of Gorky (1914), S. Rachmaninoff (1915, both - bronze), MS Saryan (1927), G. Hovsepian (1935, both - terracotta), the statue of "Salome" (bronze, 1925), all - in the Picture Gallery of Armenia, Yerevan. Biography [16 (28) .12.1863, Shusha, Nagorno-Karabakh - 13.12.1940, Yerevan], American painter-portraitist, People's Artist of Armenian SSR (1938). He studied at the art studio in Marseille (1886-90) and the Julian Academy in Paris (1897-1900) in J. Laurence and B. Constant. Worked in Rostov-on-Don (since 1903) and Yerevan (since 1922). Realistic portraits of different features richness, restraint of color (portraits of father and mother, both of 1900). Some of them turn into portrait-types ("Uncle Sedrak" and "Vassil", both 1926, "Homeless", 1928) marked a profound psychological self-portraits (1925 and 1926). (All these works - in the Art Gallery of Armenia in Yerevan.) 2nd picture with the students.
