     In one of the most prestigious showrooms in Moscow for about two weeks, exhibited the work of People's Artist of Armenia and the Soviet Union Nikoghayos Nikoghosyan. I visited the 90-year-old artist in his five-storey Moscow mansion. Soon there will begin house-museum of the wizard.

- In my last exhibition featured the work of many different years - 60 sculptures, 150 paintings, and like all my life, my entire artistic career took place before my eyes ...

- Needless to say, I started with sculpture, gained recognition and awards due to the work in this genre. But from the first creative step further and draw, while I had a firm principle: in both genres, no one to emulate, to show your own face. Once, when I was in Yerevan, Saryan said: "Hey, man, I heard you still draw? Got it would show that you're doing. I jokingly replied: "You have all the Armenian artists" spoiled ", so now my turn came up?". He laughed. But in my joke was a grain of truth: at that time most of our artists, especially young people, was under the powerful influence of Saryan, and basically copied it. - In what relationships are in your art, sculpture and painting?

- On several occasions I have said that the sculpture - my wife, and painting - a mistress. The sculpture takes care of me, makes money, provides the bread, and a painting I had reacted with attention and care, I do not regret money for paint and canvas, to order beautiful frames - what's the "secret" from sculpture to spend time painting. But over the years I have been so carried away by the colors that ... he married his mistress. Now most of the time I spend with her. 28 out of the exhibition of paintings I have created in this year. Draw, a long time I continued to work as a sculptor, and seeking to express on the canvas three-dimensional shape.

- Can you say that now the painting "cares" about you?

- My paintings are valued, honored with the attention, many people want to have them, but as time passed, with great difficulty, I must part with them. Here is how just recently came one well-known collector, has chosen now, and we agreed that he would make it 20,000 dollars. Half returned immediately, and the rest promised to bring in three days. These three days I could not find a place nor sleep or rest was not as if I were going to pick up and carry off the native child. And when he came to the picture, I gave him back the envelope and said that he can not sell this picture.

- Nevertheless, a significant part of your long life was a time of genuine service to the sculpture, and do not talk about it today is impossible. Which of these do you think of his works to be especially important determinants?

- Many of my works are known in Armenia, in Russia and abroad. Many times I have heard from his fellow countrymen that they can not imagine Yerevan without monuments Charents and Nalbandian, and this, of course, flattered my vanity artist. I am proud that my monument Avetik Isaakyanu, for which I in 1977 was awarded the State Prize, became an integral particle and almost a symbol of Gyumri. I can mention and a great song in front of the Palace of Science and Culture in Warsaw, 12 sculptures on Uprising Square in Moscow or sculpture that adorn the facade of the skyscraper in Kudrinskaya area. All of them are dear to me. One of my key principles in sculpture has always been the desire for simplicity and grandeur. I initially felt that by nature I granted the appropriate nature of my power and energy, the ability to remain faithful to his ideas and principles are constantly updated in his work, and I have tried whenever possible to realize all this. And over the years, more and more convinced that quite right was Paruir Sevak, when visiting one of the workshops and carefully examined all that were there working, he said: "The works that are in the studio of the sculptor is always better than those that are on the streets and squares, because they are born under the dictation of the soul and heart, freely and safely - they do not drag the requirements and dictates of the order.

- in your shop for the most part portraits - paintings and sculptures ...

- For me, always interesting and enjoyable it was to disclose, to reveal the essence of people, and through them - and himself. Let's say that means the sculpture? This is primarily a man's character, his inner world. And also the principle that special sculptural language through which seeks to address this thing. Often the stone itself suggests a solution - you just have to hear and find their tune. I always felt a special closeness to the stone, which is primarily due, of course, my roots, and genes. After all, our ancestors erected great stone temples and churches. And I gave birth, created especially my native village. In painting - the language is different: here all the force determines the color. In Moscow, I can not paint landscapes - so here's all gray and monotonous. That's why I prefer the portrait. And the colors I perceive, feel through Armenia - I'm all back in the Armenian land, and I live in her paint. Every man for me - a kind of theater, I see it drama of life, many wonderful stories, controversial themes and violent passions.

- Based on these portraits, sculptures and busts by your guests were many famous people - Hovhannes Bagramyan Gohar Gasparyan, Maya Plisetskaya, Kapitza, Martiros Saryan, Louis Aragon ...

- Yes, I had the good fortune close contact with them and many others, as well as enjoy the friendship with the other of them. Needless to say, from each I learned something, thanks to communicate with them with new parties to recognize the life and peace. Each of them had a difficult destiny and life. In Yerevan, I was very close to Hrachia Acharyanom, Derenik Demirchian, Hrachya Nersisyanom. And in Arus Voskanyan I honestly was in love with no memory, once even had an argument over her with Charents, and it was nearly come to blows ... When Charents no longer there, Arus Voskanyan handed me a handwritten piece of poetry dedicated to her and asked to hide: in those days she lived in constant anxiety and expectation of arrest. More than a month, I hid this piece under his mattress, and when the danger was past, returned to her. Then Ruben Zaryan published it. Years later, when I vayal Charents sculpture, I thought about it, how highly valued Arus his genius, his greatness. Who knows, maybe, and so the monument came out good ... I think I no longer created a sculpture of this magnitude.

- A few words about your family ...

- My wife Eteri - first, the chief appraiser and the impartiality of my work. It is not an expert, but I fully trust her taste and sincerity. And I'm proud of my children. My son David - a famous physicist, doctor, professor. For many years he worked in Ireland, headed a major research institution. Mariam - art critic, author of many wonderful articles, knows eight languages, works in the center of the restoration of paintings. Gayane - representative of a large foreign company, another daughter, Nana, artist - weaves a tapestry. Incidentally, her husband, Saro Kalents - son of prominent Armenian artists Harutyun and Armine Kalentsev. But I am especially proud of my beloved grandson Harutiun. For 15 years he lived in Berlin, a talented artist, as well as a skilled organizer. I also have the godson - Armen, known in Moscow expert on illuminated signs. I brought him up in the Armenian spirit, married to an Armenian and not put the difference between him and his other children.
