Amateur, is the graphic work that you have, there is no feeling that it is from nature, in my opinion, done slowly, at home, on the outline.
One of them might be, and you?

Thank you,
Igor Guriev, exactly the same impression formed from the very beginning and I have, but still wanted to discuss at the forum.
Here it is - this sketch (better to look at the full magnification). Pencil, ordinary writing paper, 27h19 See Apparently, leaf torn from a notebook: although it trimmed, but the right there are traces of the firmware. Preservation is not much, somewhere even burnt, the paper turned brown, there are spots of stubborn dirt. It can be seen, experienced many things in his lifetime. Art dignity are small, I completely understand: a person is not caught "and not developed. But perhaps the purpose of this sketch was - just fix the position and angle (that "Monty" and approved), and the person was probably drawn in the other sketch.
I wonder what is written here "Drawn at Eighth Army advanced HQ /Nov 13. 43", ie "Draw at the forward headquarters of the Eighth Army /November 13, 1943. We indicate the exact date and place of writing - not specified. This is understandable: at the time of writing, the location of the Army Staff was secret. And the finished portrait - on the contrary - is "Drawn at Eighth Army advanced HQ /Vasto, Italy 1943", ie place of writing (location of Staff) stated - it is 8 km from the River Sangro (then the front line), but no date. Eighth Army offensive began on 21 November, forcing the river Sangro, continued with heavy losses until December but has not produced decisive results: as far as Rome had not reached, although progress had been made. But the forward headquarters moved to another location, and its location on November 13 is no longer a secret by the end of the portrait, which, therefore, completed later.
By the way, I compared the portrait and sketch under a stereoscope - evasion in proportions of up to 5%. Is it permissible deviation is for the artist? Still, much as 1 /20. Can he, in fact, put on the uniform general body of another person to write a portrait?
