June 14 in Moscow has opened the 14 th International Tchaikovsky Competition. According to Interfax, the opening ceremony at the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory attended by Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.
The contest opened the concert winners in different years - Vladimir Spivakov, Denis Matsuev and Albina Shagimuratovoy. They performed works by Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich, Verdi, Bizet, Gounod, Donizetti and Mascagni.
As previously reported by the organizers, this year the number of applications submitted to the contest was a record. Desire to take part in the event expressed their 583 musicians from 47 countries. Selection were 122 performers from 29 countries.
The contest will run until July 2. At the same awards ceremony will take place on June 30, and the last two days will be devoted to a gala concert of the laureates. The first will be held at the Great Hall of the Conservatory in Moscow, the second - at the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg.
For the first time in its history (the event was founded in 1958) Tchaikovsky Competition will be held in two cities. In connection with the reconstruction of the Moscow Conservatory, the program was divided: Cello and Piano Competition held in Moscow, and the violinists and vocalists will perform in St. Petersburg.
Tchaikovsky Competition is one of the most prestigious in the world. The prize fund in 2011 will amount to 350,000 euro first prize - 20,000 euros. The contest is held every four years.
