Petro Gorban was born July 16, 1923 in the city of Stavropol. He grew up in a family working and drawing as a child he was not fascinated. But in the eighth grade, accidentally fell into an art studio, where he was interested in art lessons and hikes in the open air, was quite an elderly teacher Victor Chaldeans. In the studio, Peter studied up to graduation.

Peter's eighteenth birthday coincided with the forty-first year. A young man drafted into the Red Army. Artist was trained in the tank academy, after fighting in the tenth Red Banner Tank Corps. During the war, was wounded and concussion.

Petro Gorban mobilized in the forty-seventh and went to Krasnodar Art College.

Gorban returned to Stavropol in order to live a life of a professional artist. First carefully executed order from Art Fund have portraits of the leaders of the world proletariat. For many years he worked as a painter, as required by the strict confines of the Soviet exhibition committees, and these works are widely exhibited at official exhibitions.

Nevertheless, only forty-four years Gorban joined the Union of Artists.

Fundamental change in the artist's creative consciousness occurred in the late seventies, after reading the story, dedicated to the Great Patriotic War. Gorban created a series of works titled "Five poplars. The artist said that was the first time compiled to the symbolic nature of clarity.

Gorban inspired human life, indeed. Therefore, formally, he always referred to figurative art, recognized the Soviet system. But his unique interpretation of reality, shaped his tragic philosophy were at odds with the ideology of socialist realism. The brighter loomed individual style of the artist, the greater became his work, the less likely they were received at the exhibition, the faster growing alienation between Gorbanev and his peers. Gradually for Peter Gorbanev its fame as an informal genius. The entire second half of his life he was surrounded by students. One of the most dedicated of his students became Oleg Chernov, whose works you can see in our exhibit.

In 1990 Gorban began work on their "biblical cycle." Every day he created the graphic works on biblical subjects, like a driving diary. Each sheet he signed verbatim quotations from the Old or New Testament. "The Bible" was the top of his art, the most complete and perfect embodiment of his philosophy of life.

Petro Gorban died in autumn 1995, leaving a rich heritage, which is yet to take its place in the history of Russian art of XX century.
