                           This metaphor is not an exaggeration. Dante was the last poet of the Middle Ages and the first poet of modern times. Likewise, Prigov. He described the whole of Soviet civilization, pozdnevarvarsky universe as described by Dante's own world late Middle Ages. In letters Prigov there are so many interesting comments that we live in the illusion that we are heirs to the great Russian culture, in fact, we are similar to those barbarians who live in the ruins of the ancient world and build in their huts fragments of statues and columns. According to him, we live in anticipation of the new high culture, which is born from experience and rethink its "dark" past. He wrote this in the early 80's, but it sounds very modern now.
Dante put Florence at the center of his universe, Prigov made Moscow the core of its catastrophic universe. Some literature to read is really difficult without some training. Requires a complex literature and intellectual effort, it's not ads in the newspaper.
