to London to study "Myths Gauguin» Exhibition of paintings, drawings and sculptures by the famous French impressionist Paul Gauguin has opened in London gallery the Tate Modern. It is the largest in the last 50 years retrospective of works by this artist in Britain for her are more than 150 exhibits, including 50 paintings. The exhibition's title - "Gauguin: The creator of myths." Curator Belinda Thomson said that the organizers of the exhibition, wanted to show how the artist created a myth about himself and those parts of the world that he portrayed on the canvas, whether it be the French region of Brittany or the Pacific island of Tahiti, Gauguin brought in as the embodiment of earthly paradise. So, Gauguin portrayed himself in a respectable manner gamblers, and starring a budding artist in Copenhagen's house wife, a peasant from Brittany, a bandit and womanizer. And in the end he sees himself as an aging patient. The highest point in creating their own myth Gauguin reaches presented at the exhibition the painting "Christ in Gethsemane." It gives the artist their own traits appearance of the Savior, depicted on the eve of sufferings. Thus Gauguin is trying to convey his own feelings at a time when his work did not find a response from critics and audiences, and he felt abandoned and misunderstood. Gauguin's Polynesia - is also a series of myths and legends, the creator of which was in many ways the artist himself. After arriving in Tahiti, Gauguin saw that traditional religion and culture of Polynesia have been forgotten thanks to the efforts of Christian missionaries. The artist tried not only to study the culture of exotic islands, but also to recreate it anew in accordance with their romantic notions. Wooden idols, which he depicts in paintings, were created by Gauguin. Some of these figures can be seen at the London exhibition, as well as letters and other archival material relating to his work, such as books and newspaper clippings. The exhibition will run until January 16, then it will go to the Washington National Gallery of Art. http://www.tvkultura.ru/news_print.h...=473570&cid=46 |
