Benoit (in marriage Ustinov) Hope Leontievna May 17, 1895 (St.-Petersburg) - February 8, 1975 (Gloucestershire, England) Painter, graphic artist, set designer Comes from a family of hereditary artists: daughter of academician of architecture L. Benoit, a niece of artist Alexander N. and Alb. Benois. In 1914-1915 she studied at a studio in New AE Yakovlev and VI Shukhayev in 1917-1919 - at Shukhayev in Petrograd free art workshops. In 1920 she married a British subject, a native of Russia IP Ustinov and went to England. He painted landscapes of England, Ireland, North Wales, France, Italy, in impressionist style. She participated in many group shows in London, Paris, USA, Canada and Australia. Has solo exhibitions in galleries Adelphi (1924), Arthur Tusa (1929, 1932, 1936),. In addition to painting and graphics worked scenography ("Sleeping Beauty" by Tchaikovsky, 1939), proved to be an excellent book illustrator. Her son, - Peter (Peter) Ustinov - famous actor, director, playwright and novelist. A retrospective exhibition of the artist was held in 1975 at Gallery M. Parkin. Works of Hope Benoit are in many museum and private collections, including Tate Gallery in London, the Benois family museum in St. Petersburg and others. |
