What is Art? Art is born out of joy and sorrow, but especially from grief. It is born out of human life.
Edvard Munch Yesterday we looked at the exhibition "Edvard Munch or the Anti-cry" in the Paris Pinakothek (article about which I recently put on the forum). I put the 40 prints that I scanned from a catalog. The work presented in this exhibition are nearly all from private collections, so you can say that we have provided a unique opportunity to see them. Along with custom portraits and printmaking there are several of these masterpieces. The first generation of collectors of paintings by Munch bought them directly from the artist. There are a whole series of anecdotes about how Munch was paying for his work for the services rendered or in exchange for any subject. So, Jens Thys (1870-1942), director of the National Gallery in Oslo, a friend and patron of Munch, said that Munch painting presented "Music for Karl Johan (1889) Vita shoemaker in exchange for a pair of shoes. In 1888, Munch won six crowns at his friend, the philologist Bendix Lange, who, seeing that Munch can not recover the debt, suggested that the artist paint his picture. The owner of the "childhood memories" (1892) said that his father got it together with other work as rent for two-bedroom apartment. However, at the very beginning of the twentieth century, wealthy Norwegian art collectors have become interested in his work and buy his work. Thus was formed a few large collections of Munch. Subsequently, some of them were donated by the Norwegian city or state. At the same time painter became increasingly reluctant to part with their works - for sale he made prints.
