Art Exhibition of the Kingdom of Meroe in the Louvre
 

The exhibition at the Louvre devoted to the kingdom of Meroe, located in the upper reaches of the Nile, in the modern Sudan, shows the originality of his art, which combines a tradition of Egyptian, African, Greek and Roman culture. In the era of the pharaohs to the region, which the Egyptians called "country of Kush (Nubia), was subservient to Egypt and to pay tribute in gold, ebony, cattle, and warriors.

Terracotta and ceramic intended for burials reveal the syncretism of the culture, which combined the pantheon of Egyptian Amun, Isis, Osiris and Anubis with a local god Apedemakom, represented as a ureusa - cobra with a lion's head, and with the Greek Silenus, Dionysus and Zeus.

In 730 BC, taking advantage of Egypt, the Nubians were freed from the yoke of egopetskogo and even subjected him on kotorky period before the Assyrians expelled them from there. Later, the Romans attempted to conquer Meroe, but without success - in 29 BC Augustus was forced to sign a truce with the queen of Nubia.
