"Portrait of Angel Fernandez de Soto (Absinth Drinker)" (1903) Brush Pablo Picasso put up for auction with Christie's estimate of 30-40 million pounds (45-60 million dollars). This is the largest estimate, with which a work of art ever exhibited in European trading, reports Reuters. The auction will be held on June 23.
Seller Picasso made famous composer Andrew Lloyd Webber. Funds raised from the sale will go to the charity fund Webber, who is engaged in the development of the arts in the UK. The composer himself has bought a portrait, referring to the "Blue Period Picasso, in 1995 for 29.2 million dollars.
In 2006, the painting is put up for auction, but later withdrew from the bidding for 11 hours before they begin. Then a man said that the painting was removed from his family by the Nazis, and therefore should belong to him. Since then, the dispute was settled. Representatives of Christie's claim that the painting should be of great interest among collectors.
Journalists bind commended paintings at Christie's with the recent success of competitors from Sotheby's: in February, a sculpture by Giacometti sold for 104,3 million dollars. This lot was not only the most expensive sculpture, but also the most expensive work of art sold at auction. The previous record belonged to Picasso: his "Boy with a Pipe" in 2004 sold for 104.2 million. In 2009, Picasso became the most expensive artist at auction: his works have sold for a total of 121 million dollars.
