Biographical details are few and contradictory. Childhood and adolescence spent in Odessa and Vilna. From 1915 studied drawing in private schools. In 1902 a short time in high school Aschbe in Munich, where he met with W. Kandinsky, Jawlensky AG, MV Verevkina. A close association "Blue Rider". Since 1914 - Member of the Munich Secession. In 1914 he exhibited his work in the Russian section of the Baltic Exhibition in Malmo.

Many traveled, worked in Paris and Cairo, from 1921 - in Berlin. In 1910-s engaged in easel and monumental painting. Been influenced by P. Puvis de Chavannes, and G. von Mare. Later (in 1920) focused on the chart, worked in lithographs, woodcuts, etchings. Served as illustrations for the Berlin and Munich publisher. Created lithographic albums: "Figured (figurative) compounds" (1912, Munich, 20 sheets), "Woman. The ratio of women to the war "(1915, Munich, 11 sheets). Performed "Book outline" (1916, Berlin), which includes 80 drawings pen and 5 lithographs, the graphic series "Types of Berlin brothels" (1920). Participated in group exhibitions in galleries graphic "Tanguazer" in Munich (1919) and "Flehtgeym" in Berlin (1922-1923).

In 1926-1927, apparently, made a trip to Bali, made on the island of paintings and drawings are largely consonant with the works of Gauguin, established in Tahiti.

In 1930-1935 he lived in Paris in 1936-1937 - in New York. Held a solo exhibition in New York gallery "Lilienfeld" (1936). In 1937 he returned to the USSR.

Genin works are in many museum collections including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Art Museum in Basel, and others.

According to some data in 1941, on the other in 1943 committed suicide.

According to the book Leikind, dressing and Severyukhina "Russian artists living abroad 1917-1939 Robert Genin born with. High Klimovichi have. Mogilev Province. In one of the numbers of "Apollo" is mentioned, that Genin was born in Vitebsk. Where does the version of the Smolensk province?
