Francesco Clemente (1952)
 

In the early 1970's., Finishing school, he began to study architecture, but in the end under the influence of art of Cy Twombly and Alighieri Boetti threw architecture and took up painting. In 1971 he had his first solo exhibition in the Roman gallery di Valle Giulia (Galleria di Valle Giulia). His work, in which he used traditional materials for painting, against a background of conceptual aesthetic that dominated during the late 1960's - early 1970's.

In 1979 he joined the movement Transavantgarde and became a key figure in this direction, calling for a return to painting. In 1980 his works were exhibited in the Italian pavilion at the Venice Biennale, and drew him to her general interest, which contributed to the return of expressionism in painting.

In 1972, Clemente visited Afghanistan. In a series of pastels, which he created on his return, notably the influence of oriental folklore. This effect is even more intensified after his travels in India. In his paintings of that time is characterized expressionism, sharp color kontresty, mysticism.

In the early 1980's. He moved to New York. There he struck up contact with local artists, uchpastvoval in joint projects with Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol in 1984

In 1990 he organized his solo exhibition at the Philadelphia Museum of Fine Arts, followed by the 1994 exhibition in Paris in 1998 - a retrospective at the Metropolitan Museum in 2000 - the exhibition at the Guggenheim.

Francesco Clemente about his method of work:
