"Portrait of a Man" by Rembrandt set a record at Christie's auction

Painting Harmensz van Rijn Rembrandt's "Portrait of a Man" (1658) sold in the past in London, Christie's auction for a record price for paintings of this Dutch painter amount - 20 млн 201 тысяча 250 pounds (33 млн 200 thousand dollars).

Although experts predicted price increase for this portrait to 25 million pounds, gained for him the amount was enough to beat the previous record set in December 2000. Then, at Christie's auction was sold to "Portrait of a Lady" (1632) for 19.8 million pounds.

For the first time, half-length portrait akimbo men "(Portrait of a man, half-length, with his arms akimbo) put up for tender in 1930 and was sold for a very large sum for those times - 18,5 thousand pounds sterling, equivalent to 6 million pounds in current prices. Her lucky buyer, an American collector George Huntington Hartford Jr., later donated the painting Columbia University.

However, when in 1968 university students staged a demonstration, now hurriedly moved to the warehouse. In 1974 the portrait was sold again, and up to now was in a meeting of the heirs of the pharmaceutical company Johnson & Johnson.

The last time the picture appeared in public in 1970 at the exhibition "Rembrandt 300 years later in Detroit.

Her new owner was asked to remain anonymous connoisseur of painting. Who is depicted in the portrait, still unknown
