Ivan Sotnikov (St. John) was born in 1961, systematic art education is not received. Visited while studying in school children's art school, briefly studied at a vocational school with a photographic bent. As an artist Sotnikov was formed early on, for twenty years his style was already fully formed. Widely known in narrow circles" connoisseurs of painting of the Leningrad underground Ivan acquired in the early 1980-ies as a participant of numerous exhibitions of TEII (the Association of Experimental Art), as well as exhibitions organized by Timur Novikov group "New artists" (perhaps the three most significant artist of this group - Timur, Oleg Kotelnikov, Ivan Sotnikov). And Sotnikov always gravitated toward Mitcham, since 1986, regularly exhibited at the exhibitions of this group, and just hung out with a lot Mikami. You could say he was the Mitki artist of the "new" and the "new" from the "Mitki". Range of subjects, painting Sotnikova is quite wide: the biggest part of his legacy are landscapes, with views of St. Petersburg, across rural landscapes and still lifes; portraits, there are images of fish, birds and other animals. I remember a large series of paintings about long black cars. Since the mid-1980s, Ivan Sotnikov began working in the Church in the village of Vyritsa. First there was the guard, then - over time - became a deacon. And then was ordained a priest named father John, in which the state and is now serving in a rural village Church plank-Nedelsky Novgorod diocese.
