In your signature see "Skohn". This artist does not know.
I suppose the Jewish artist, perhaps Belarusian or Polish.
But may be wrong.

Пряник 15.12.2014 22:59

Hello...
I am an Amateur in comparison with other forum users, so could be wrong.
I think that the portrait of the Jew greengrocer. Painfully pronounced appearance, the hands not of the peasant. The Russian Empire, rather Belarus...

It makes no sense to identify the author,a very weak letter look like written by hand.

[QUOTE="Пряник;3307391"]Although cap some Rossiiskii@
Found the explanation to the cap...
"Frightened by the pogroms of 1881-82, tens of thousands of Jews fled from Russia and concentrated in Germany and Austria-Hungary, waiting to go to the United States..."

It seems this is a "family" portrait. The model is not rich (the patch on the right sleeve), so the artist is not expensive...

Sincerely,

ivan-msk, the portrait depicts a Jewish man in traditional Jewish clothing- coat, buttoned right-to-left...,
i.e. not traditional "European"- from left to right.

And the man (before 1917) or ignored "Royal Decree No. 24127 from may 1, 1851 "On the denial of the use of a special Jewish service",
or resided on the territory of the Russian Empire...:rolleyes:
