Apparently, this is a relatively modern copy of an ancient portrait. It is important to know, covered-whether painting with a protective varnish?

I'm a complete zero. How to understand whether it is covered with varnish? The picture is not bright. And I don't know who drew the old portrait, and it cannot be found?

1. Type in Yandex search: Bogdan Khmelnitsky portrait
and look for your prototype.
2. If the picture is not shiny, then consult a conservator as to restore the optical properties of the dried painting.
3. Portrait of B. H. are:

Natalia, generalizing the work of the early iconography of Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytsky (like the works of Kim Slackage and other Ukrainian researchers about the iconography of another Hetman - Mazepa) unknown to me. Specialist in this issue of Museum employee Bohdan Khmelnytsky in Chyhyryn (Cherkasy region of Ukraine) Love Smigol; I met her publications on this topic. I think You can contact her by writing to the address of the Museum: nikz.chigir@gmail.com Extensive database of in vivo and early post-mortem iconography of Ukrainian hetmans of the 17th and 18th centuries, collected by the staff of the Kiev Museum of hetmanship; not too much to ask and there: hetmanmus@ukr.net

Oleg, didn't want to offend Artoil-A, but You, in my opinion, closer to the truth than he. However, the portrait is to do seriously.

The canvas is difficult to ground, so that no cracks were formed, also difficult was the technique of oil painting that is not lost when storing the picture color. The poor preservation of color painting and no visible crazing and weave of the canvas me and is suggestive of a later version of the portrait.
