Mosaics of Ravenna

Ravenna - is an ancient city on the Adriatic coast of Northern Italy. The first mention of it belongs to the first century BC. At the beginning of V century, Emperor Honorius transferred the capital of the Western Empire from Milan to Ravenna. In 467, after the collapse of the Empire, Ravenna won the leader of the Ostrogoths, Theodoric, he built a magnificent basilica, dedicated to the Savior, and now bearing the name of St. Apollonia New /Basilica di San Apollinare Nuovo /; Church of the Resurrection /Anastasis Gothorum /, which was later called the Church of the Holy Spirit /Chiesa dello Spirito Santo /, and who was then the Cathedral next to the baptistery ariantsev. /Battistero degli Ariani /. Collection of copies of ancient mosaics of Ravenna was founded in the early 50-ies of the last century, at the initiative of Professor Giuseppe Bovin, to disseminate knowledge of Ravenna and its priceless collections around the world. Copies were made by a group mozaistov from the Academy of Fine Arts on a specially created technology. First of all, each sample representing an accurate and complete sketch of the entire mosaic tiles, filmed on tracing paper overlaid on the surface of the original mosaics. Then, after determining the mosaic of colors, the glass factories of Murano in Venice, plates were made of opaque glass, of which, by hand, cut mosaic plates, which are subsequently fastened to the base. Municipality of Ravenna owned sixty of these copies. Over the last fifty years, a separate copy, and sometimes the entire collection, were presented in Europe and overseas. The first exhibition was held in Paris in 1951.

The exhibition at the State Museum of Architecture presented a copy of the mosaics of the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, the Basilica of St. Vital, the Basilica of St. Apollinaria the New and the Basilica of St. Apollinaria in the classroom, the Orthodox Baptistery, the Arian Baptistery, and the chapel of the archbishop.
