Святослав Рерих
Являясь младшим сыном знаменитого русского художника, гуманиста и философа Николая Рериха, Святослав Рерих с детства проявлял интерес к искусству. Уже в тринадцать лет он написал первый портрет своего отца, а в пятнадцать - помогал ему с театральными декорациями в Ковент-Гардене в Лондоне. После краткого прибывания в Лондоне, семья Рерих была приглашена в Америку Институтом искусства в Чикаго. В Нью-Йорке, Святослав поступил на архитектурный факультет Колумбийского университета, продолжая интересоваться искусством, веря что "поиски внутреннего мира и самореализации могут идти только через здравые и творческие усилия" (Святослав Рерих, "Творческие мысли," Творческие мысли: Статьи Святослава Рериха, Москва 2004, стр. 21).

В 1923 году, перед экспедицией семьи в Индию, состоялась первая выставка Святослава Рериха в нью-йоркской галерее Арден. Портрет Николая Рериха в тибетском халате написан через несколько лет после присоединения Святослава к семье в Индии. Полотно передает не только его уважение к отцу, но и подчеркивает его уникальную технику рисования портрета: выделение одних деталей и нивелирование других. На портрете в тибетском халате Николай Рерих представлен не только как отец художника, но и как фигура, определяющая его место в царстве духовного мира. Святослав Рерих изображает отца вне времени и вне пространства, используя приемы ортодоксальной иконописи, где перспектива зданий перевёрнута, где источник света неясен, и фигура расположена на полотне центрально и доминантно. Именно элементы иконной живописи, соединеные с архитектурой тибетского храма, с символом знамени мира возле его подписи и буддийские символы, отличают этот портрет Николая Рериха от других его портретов, написаных Святославом. Кроме того, эти стилистические дополнения и преувеличения передают огромную любовь и уважение Святослава к отцу, которого он описывал так:
