At the end of April in Kiev PinchukArtCentre starting a large-scale solo exhibition of British artist Damien Hirst. To qualify as an event of world-scale project "Requiem" is enough for the status of the first major retrospective of the art-stars today. Exceptional as it makes the world premiere of 40 paintings the artist, who until now was known for his installations with carcasses in formaldehyde and completely ignored the painting. On the forthcoming exhibition of Damien Hirst's CEO PinchukArtCentre Eckhard Schneider told Kommersant MARY HALIZEVOY.
- Who was the initiator of the project and how long he had been preparing?
- This was the idea of Viktor Pinchuk, supported by Damien Hirst. Then I joined the project as a whole for training lasted six months. Chief artist of our time, a powerful young art institution and a rapidly growing Eastern European metropolis - this will agree, a wonderful combination and a particular challenge for all three parties. Actually, in my opinion, this is one of the major exhibition projects of recent decades for the world.
- Why Hirst exhibits his premiere work in Kiev, which, quite frankly, is not the center of art-world?
- I think for this there are two reasons. First, a close relationship with Viktor Pinchuk, with whom they have a common passion - art. Secondly, Damien is always looking for places where his work will be properly accepted by the public. Because every place has its traditions, which sometimes become a stumbling block for the artist. This is particularly true in Western Europe, where contemporary art is very much, so that the viewer no longer perceive it as a kind of emotional experience and an invitation to communication.
- Damien Hirst is now just 43 years. Not too soon yet to arrange a large retrospective?
- He was 25 years old when he made his first shark - usually in the age artists still learning. So we are talking about more than 20 years of work. In addition, the "Requiem" will mark a new phase in his work: instead of concepts that are embodied in the life of his studio assistants, appeared painting, where there is only himself and the canvas. And fear, who feels every artist, being on the threshold of something new - fear of being misunderstood.
- Do not you think that the world is tired of Hearst, which has long since become too much?
- This is a normal situation. Inflated by a huge bubble that eventually bursts - and everything goes back to the point to the question of whether an artist's work can be deeply personal experience for everyone, whether they say something important about our time, and whether it will survive. I think Hirst - one of the few contemporary artists who will remain in history. And the latest work will be cause for a new round of discussions about the essence of his creativity.
- Can we say that resorting to painting - is an attempt to find a creative way out of crisis?
- I think about the crisis, you're right. But this does not mean that he would declare a false and meaningless all that he did so far. Because his ideas have remained the same, changed only the way of their reports to the public: even with a brush in hand, he is Damien Hirst.
- In many of his works, he affects religious themes. Does it worry you protest the believers and the church?
- His work is in any case are not offensive to believers. He is not talking about religion, but about human existence in general and about our attitude toward life and death. Hurst does something for the sake of the scandal, but those who want to quarreling, it is still quarreling.
- Where should you find work that will be included in a retrospective?
- All are from private collections (some traveling from the U.S.), and painting - property of the artist. Results will be presented over a hundred works on all four floors of an art center and additional space for two sharks in the courtyard "Arena-City". The exhibition will be a lot of very large works - only one "A Thousand Years» takes Half the room. Some installations have been in a London studio, where they are checked for integrity and repaired, so that a five-month exhibition in Kiev, they stand up.
- A diamond skull lucky?
- No, he is now on tour to museums. And I would not say that this work is somehow related to the creation of Damien Hirst - rather, it is an object in itself.
- Why is the exhibition is a grim name?
- It emphasizes the sublime balance between life and death, and in the spirit of the baroque tradition recalls the proximity of these phenomena. In addition, this retrospective of phasing, because it will show as a Damien Hirst dead, and another was born.
