 Biography
 December 12, 1850 in St. Petersburg, the son of a minister of the Imperial Court, was born Alexei Fedorovich Afanasiev. He studied at the Reformed school, and from 1868 he worked as a minister, a stoker, a footman at court.
 In 1872 he was admitted to the Academy of Fine Arts in painting a volunteer, a year later transferred to full-scale class. Honorable Mention was awarded a silver medal for drawing from nature.
 In 1879, the board asked the Academy to allow it to pass the entrance exam in the number of pupils, but he refused Academic Council. In 1886, Afanasiev took a certificate of attendance of the Academy classes, and the following year he entered a teacher at the School of Drawing for an auditor.
 He worked primarily in religious and everyday genres.
