Mary Holderness. New Russia. Journey from Riga to the Crimea, by way of Kiev; with some account of the colonization, and the manners and customs of the colonists of New Russia. To which are added, notes relating to the Crim Tatars. London: Sherwood, Sons and Co., 1823. 326 p., Ill.
The book is written English woman who has lived for four years in the Crimea (1816-1820). Her note will talk about moving to the Crimea and staying there. Author crossed from north to south, the entire territory of Ukraine in modern administrative boundaries, a special section is devoted to Kiev. About half of the book relate to the Crimea, its geography, nature, people, history and ethnography. Illustrated edition (see photo). Three inserts - with hand-painted engravings depicting Russian peasant, Greek and Moldovan Anatolian Greeks. Yet another black-and-white inset, folded in four, presented panorama of Kaffa (modern Feodosiya) from the sea. The book is out of print in hard copy and are not translated. Is a curious and little demand by researchers source for the history and geography of Eastern Europe, especially Ukraine and Crimea. Well-preserved specimens, including illustrations. On pages - fox spots. Bottom margins trimmed with interwoven. Possessory autograph on the title page, print Belfast Public Library. Binding of the twentieth century (lederin red with gold lettering).
