Born into a family archaeologist and bibliographer DV Polenov. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts ( 1863-71 ), also took private lessons from Pavel Chistyakov and Kramskoi . As a pensioner of the Academy of Arts in 1872-76 visited Italy, France and Germany. Participated as a volunteer in the Serbo- Montenegrin- Turkish War of 1876 and as an artist- reporter - in the Russian- Turkish war of 1877-1878 . Traveled to the Middle East and Greece (1881-1882 , 1899 and 1909) , Italy ( 1883-1884, 1894-1895) . Was a member of the Association of Traveling Art Exhibitions.
