The exhibition will present 70 rare engravings from Moscow private collections on the Revelation of St. John and its interpretation of the famous series of Albrecht Dürer «Apocalypsis cum figuris» («Apocalypse in pictures"), first published in 1498. The exhibition series will be shown in full lifetime imprints. Dürer's compositions appear in the context of the earlier tradition, as well as works of contemporaries and followers of the master: Michael Wohlgemuth (1434-1519), Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472-1553), Johann Teyfel (rab.1568-1584), Peter van der Borhta (1545 - 1608), Christoffel van Zihema II (1581-1658), as well as the author of a famous Bible Piscator (1639) and Morten (1700). This approach allows us to take a fresh look at the masterpiece of Durer, and in comparison to stress ingenious innovation wizard. The exhibition consists of two parts. First - introductory - dedicated St. John, author of the text of Revelation, and Durer - the author engraved "Apocalypse." This section presents engravings Michael Wohlgemuth, teacher Dürer. It's three pages of "World Chronicle" (so-called "Nuremberg Chronicle", Nuremberg, 1493) H.Shedelya telling about the end times foretold in the Revelation of St. John. The main section of the exhibition devoted to the "Apocalypse" Dürer. It presents all the sheets of the series, originating from a private collection in Moscow. Engravings by Durer's contemporaries and followers are on display next to the master sheet, and with quotations from the text of the Apocalypse, which allows the viewer to compare yourself to learn how the various masters treated the same themes of Revelation. The exhibition introduces the works of artists whose works are exhibited only rarely. Many of them will be first presented to the Russian public. |
