Vasily Vereshchagin (1835-1909) - Russian historical painter and portraitist.
Biography
Born on 1 (13), 1835 in Perm, his father Peter Prokopievich (1795-1843) and grandfather Procopius Danilovich (1764 - after 1811) Vereshchagin were painters. Artists brother Peter (1834-1886) and Mitrofan (1842-1894) Picture. Primary education in the district school, he learned painting from his grandfather J. Babin and William A. Orlov, who took an active part in his life.
Original art education from a local icon painter, but in 1856 he entered the Academy of Fine Arts student AT Markov. During the six years in the Academy, he received all academic medals. For the program "The Grand Duchess Sophia Vitovtovna at the wedding of Grand Prince Vasily the Dark ..." was awarded the gold medal of the 1st rank of dignity and class artist of the 1st degree.
Going abroad retiree Academy Vereshchagin visited all the important art centers, but mostly worked in Rome, studying and copying the old masters. Upon his return to St. Petersburg in 1869, he presented to the Academy in a report on its activities overseas picture: "Gregory the Great curses for violation of the deceased monk vows besserebriya" (1862, RM), "Date prisoner and his family" (1868, TG, repetition - PGHG), "Night at Calvary" (1869, RM), "The Prayer of St. Anne, the mother of the prophet Samuel," (1864, a gold medal at the World Exhibition in Paris - 1867 PGHG), three portraits, two large paintings and twenty watercolors, for which he became a professor of history painting and portraiture. For more than 20 years he taught at the Academy of drawing and composition.
In 1870, Vereshchagin went back to Rome, and on his return to St. Petersburg engaged in the execution of the wall decorations of the palace of Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich on themes of Russian folk poetry. Painted "Ilya Muromets at a banquet at Prince Vladimir" (1872), "Alyosha Popovich," "Fight Dobryni Gorynych with the Serpent", "Virgin-dawn" and "Ovsen", in large amounts, a special ribbed canvas in imitation of tapestry; - was for them a gold medal at the World Exhibition in Vienna (1873).
To the most remarkable works should be considered: "The Baptism of Saint Vladimir", "installing of Christianity in Kiev" and "Bookmark Tithe church." These recent paintings are in the church of the palace of Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich. Capital works are works Vereshchagin in the temple of the Savior in Moscow (1875-1879), as well as for the Assumption Cathedral of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra. Also outstanding his paintings, "The Descent from the Cross", "Roman girls", "Chuchar," "Hey!". In 1891, Vereshchagin published "Album stories of the Russian state in the pictures great power of its representatives." On the academic exhibition in 1891 was a large picture of Vereshchagin "Defenders of the Holy Trinity Sergius Lavra in 1608" (1891, RM). They performed several lithographs, namely "Svyatopolk Damned, chased the shadows of his brothers," "Holy, holding a cross in front of the bear open mouth", "Three lions' heads."
