Aref, Alexander was born in Leningrad in 1931. He was engaged in an art studio at the Palace of Pioneers S. Levin. He studied at the SKHSH (1944-1949) was expelled for formalism. Already there was formed around the Commonwealth, at one time called themselves "The Order of mendicant (or unsold) Painters" (Onge), now often referred to as "Arefevskim circle" (or arefevtsami). He graduated from night school and enrolled in the 2nd Medical Institute, where he studied for two years (1954-1956). In 1956 was convicted for forging a prescription and stayed in the camp until 1959. Served time again (1965), ostensibly "for the attempted murder" as a result of household quarrels. Glagoleva, among his predecessors especially appreciated by the French artist H. Daumier, L.Solomatkina Wanderers. Since the late 1960s. - A member of the Leningrad City Committee of Artists Books, charts and posters (he was expelled in 1976). He worked in painting and drawing (landscape, portraits, genre). The most significant cycles - "Don Quixote", "Bath," "Lady and the Hooligan," "Antique Series", "Prison Cycle." He was one of the most active organizers of the exhibition in the Palace of Culture. II Strip. The exhibition in the Palace of Culture "Nevsky" boycott in solidarity with the artists, not admitted to participate in it. Declared himself a Jew, has participated in exhibitions of the "Aleph". In 1977 he emigrated, he lived in Paris.
