Martiros Saryan was born (16) February 28, 1880 near Rostov-on-Don. Ancestors of Ani Saryan moved to the Crimea, and in the reign of Catherine II of the Crimean shore of the Don.

Saryan's large family, following the tradition, lived a simple measured and patriarchal life on a lonely farm in the distance from the city. Since childhood, Martiros showed inclination for drawing, and nature was his inspiration. In 1897 he entered the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture.

In 1901 he first went to Armenia. Saryan was there in many places: Lori, Shirak, Ani, Edchmiadzin, Haghpat, Sanahin, Yerevan, Sevan ... The impressions were indelible. Subsequently, the geography of travel is expanding: in addition to continuing in Armenia, he visited Constantinople, Egypt and Persia. World War I prevented the artist to see India and Japan.

In 1916 he married Lusik Aghayan, the daughter of a prominent Armenian writer Ghazaros Aghayan. Participates in the organization of the Society of Armenian artists, draws Bryusov famous "Anthology of Armenian Poetry."

In 1917, Saryan moved with his family to Armenia. Beginning in 1923 he created the famous series of paintings that were shown with great success at the XIV Venice Biennale, "Mountain", "Armenia", "My Yard", "Aragats", "Yerevan".
