December 26, 1825 in St. Petersburg on the Senate Square was the Decembrist uprising


In February, 1816 in St. Petersburg, appeared the first secret political society - "Union of Salvation," which put the goal of the abolition of serfdom in Russia and the adoption of the constitution. It was headed by AN Ants, S. Ants Apostle, SP Troubetzkoy, ID Yakushkin PI Pestel. Limited forces led members of the "Union" to create a broader organization, and in 1818 was established in Moscow, "the Union of Welfare," with about 200 members of the charter and had an extensive program of action.

Ways to achieve their goals conspirators saw in promoting their views in preparing society for the revolutionary painless coup. However, because of disagreements society was dissolved.

In March 1821 Ukraine emerged Southern Society was headed by a PI Pestel, and in St. Petersburg on the initiative of NM Muravyev was organized the Northern Society. Both companies worked together and saw themselves as part of an organization.

In 1823, preparations began for the uprising, which was scheduled for summer 1826. However, because of the death of Alexander I in December 1825 the conspirators were forced to proceed to action immediately. Members of the Northern Society decided to address the requirements of its program on the day of the oath to the new Emperor Nicholas I.

(14) December 26, 1825 on the Senate gathered in the square 3000 of the rebels. But Nicholas, who knew about the plot, took the oath before the Senate. SP Trubetskoy - Head of the Decembrists - the square was not. There have been tightened government forces and the performance was suppressed.

In the case of the Decembrists were attracted 579 people found guilty of 289. Five - Ryleev, Pestel, Kakhovsky Bestuzhev-Rumin, Ants-Apostol - were hanged. More than 120 people were sent to different terms of penal servitude in Siberia or settlement.
