Decameron in Pictures


Everyone knows a collection of short stories Giovanna Boccaccio Decameron: during the plague struck Florence in 1348, ten of the noble young men decide to leave the city and wait out the end of the epidemic in the estate of one of them. And to not be bored during his forced seclusion, they go for walks, listening to music, sing, dance, and every day, each one tells a story, funny, ribald, or vice versa, the sad - both in Europe originated a genre novel.

Collected immediately began to enjoy great success, while at the same time, its author has been criticized, in particular, for their philogyny. Accordingly, all new copies were made, and later - reissue of printed books. The most famous artists have done anlyuminyury to this masterpiece of late medieval literature or proto-Renaissance. So I decided to show you a very small part of the illustrations for "The Decameron", accompanied by a summary of their stories, invented by Boccaccio (which is in front of each chapter novella).
