Stealing in the Forbidden City
From the Forbidden City, the palace complex of the Chinese emperors in Beijing City, and stole seven items worth 10 million yuan (1.5 million dollars). As reported by the Hong Kong edition of The Standard, we are talking about the accessories of the exhibition devoted to Western and Chinese way of life.
According to Xinhua News Agency, the thief managed to take pictures of security cameras. Apparently, the culprit hiding in the museum before its closure on Sunday, May 8, and brought stolen property before midnight. Official confirmation was received from representatives of the theft of the museum on Tuesday, May 10. How the thief managed to make jewelry and escape the museum did not specify. Agency Agence France-Presse reports that among the stolen items were mainly for jewelry boxes, powder and other ladies accessories beginning of XX century. The exhibits were drawn from the private collection of the museum Liang and Chang in Hong Kong and exhibited in the hall Zhai Gong in the north-eastern part of the Forbidden City. Temporary exhibition, from which the missing values, was opened in the Forbidden City in late April and, despite the theft, should last until June 27, 2011. The last attempt to steal the art of well-guarded museum of the Forbidden City was launched in 1987 and failed. The offender was caught and sentenced to life imprisonment. Prior to that, since 1949 in the archives of the Chinese police were reported four of attempted abduction of exhibits from the museum. The Forbidden City was built in the early XV century and served as the imperial palace for the Ming and Qing dynasties. In 1925, after the fall of the Qing Dynasty palace complex with total area of 720,000 square meters was given to the museum. |
