Marianne Verevkina (1860-1938)
 

Verevkina was born in Tula, in an aristocratic family. Her father - a general, hero of the Crimean and Russian-Turkish war, was later commandant of the fortress. Mother was fond of painting and she painted.

Studied at the Vilnius girls' high school, then at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture.

After moving in 1885 families in St. Petersburg Marianne took lessons from Ilya Repin, who wrote eeportret, (stored in the house-museum Repin). Later Verevkina wrote: "Repin admired my work. But the realistic world, as well as romantic, seemed alien to me. My own idea is still unclear hovered before me in the air.

In 1891, Repin Verevkina met with Alexei Jawlensky, who was then studied painting at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts.
They lived together for thirty years.
