Vladimir Markov (Voldemars Matvejs) 1877-1914
In 2002 there was an exhibition at the Museum of Private Collections in the IIC - "In Search of Art budeschego. Voldemars Matvejs, and the Union of Youth"

Цитата:

Voldemars Matvejs never been an artist. That is, he was engaged in painting, was exhibited and was even known to their peers. But love and love him not for it and not under this name: Vladimir Markov - one of the theorists of "new art" of the early XX century. As a theorist, and he knows it.

As a painter, he was frankly bad. And the 16 paintings were brought to the exhibition of Latvia, is a convincing show. His "Seven Princesses" (1908-1910) - a bad version of art "Blue Rose". His "Reapers" (1910) - second-rate variation of the plot Millet. And the strange name of the exhibition - "In search of art of the future" - not adequately material: in their own canvases Matvejs clearly followed the already obsolete styles. If it were not for one "but" ...
Matvejs - undoubtedly apologist "poor art". The brightest feature of it - is its mediocrity. In the literal sense: gray paint on a gray background, he wrote his "Madonna" (1910). And to write it, traveled to the island of Gotland, where he studied medieval provincial sculpture. As an imitator epigones, he found something in his gradual liberation from the bright colors and multiple lines. And in this he did not understand his contemporaries and did not appreciate descendants. Although Matvejs go out into the daylight from the tomb somewhere in Moscow thirties, it would wear on the hands.
Major work Matvejs - it is his articles and books. Therefore, a small exhibition at MLK - more bibliographic than fiction. For example, a sample dembelskogo album - women's writing "Ensign Svyatoslav Alexandrovich Nagubnikovu, carefully pasted in a notebook with risunochkami. Ensign, incidentally, also had artistic inclinations. It can be expected in the Pushkin exhibition Nagubnikova. So to mice ...
But the main thing - it negros. For Markov that African sculpture, that the Goths, that Tver gingerbread horse - all may be one of interest as art "primitive." He studied it, and that following the French taste. Traveling through Europe, Markov photographed African statues in ethnographic museums. The new prints from old negatives, leave the most vivid impression of the exhibition: without knowing, Markov was a good photographer.

While writing, Fross already answered ... but, hopefully, will not be superfluous.

Vladimir Ivanovich Markov - a pen name Woldemar Matthew (Voldemars (c) Hans Matthias (c) - a Latvian-style) (1877 - 1914) artist, art theorist, one of the active members of the Society of Artists' Union of Youth. Latvian by birth, a native of Riga, on arrival in St. Petersburg in the Russian manner, he was recommended by Vladimir Ivanovich Matveev, and appeared in print under the pseudonym V. Markov.

Matthew received his primary art education in Riga at the school drawing B. Blum, who graduated with honors. His thesis "Birches at sunset," was exhibited in Paris and in Rome, where she won a gold medal. In St. Petersburg, studied at the famous studio schedule and teacher Tsionglinskogo. From 1906 to 1914 he studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts, which is not finished, had died a month before the submission of a competitive final picture.
At the Academy he studied in the same year with Paul and Barbara Filonov Bubnov (which was his wife) - as, indeed, was in the Union of Youth.

In 2002 the Museum of Private Collections held his exhibition: In search of art of the future. Waldemars Matvejs and the Union of Youth "(for the 125 th anniversary of the artist).
After the exhibition, he immediately ceased to be an unknown artist:
The book is a series of avant-garde art 1910-1920-ies. Waldemar Matthew and the Union of Youth. M., 2005
Here's another article Irena Buzhinskaya. (Curator of exhibitions, the State Art Museum in Riga).

Why do they - the Neo-Futurists?
It turns out that they added a "neo" to distinguish themselves from the various I. Shkolnikov, E. Spandikov, P. Potipak, T. Schleifer, etc., etc.
It turns out a wild discordant concert.
Gribatnikov disowns Shkolnikov, Spandikov from Michelson Lentulov by Shleifer and Potipaki, probably from himself.
Thus, neo-futurists, with all the above simply futurists have different ways.

1913
January. Third exhibition "The Knave of Diamonds" opens in St. Petersburg with the participation of D. Burlyuk Lentulova, Tatlin, Exter, Braque, Picasso, Rousseau, etc. In March, a shortened version of the exhibition will move to Moscow.
February. Society "Knave of Diamonds" will organize a debate in Moscow, which Mayakovsky and David Burliuk, talking about contemporary art, call for the destruction of museums, "these sarcophagi of art.
Larionov has organized an exhibition "Target" in Moscow with the participation Goncharova, Malevich, Pirosmani, Shevchenko and Chagall. In this exhibition, first exhibited "luchistskie" work Larionov.
April. Tatlin, visited Paris, met with reliefs of Picasso.
August. Huge Goncharova's solo exhibition opened in Moscow, a smaller version of the exhibition next year will move to St. Petersburg.
November. The last exhibition of the Youth League has opened in St. Petersburg with the participation of Burliuks, Exter, Filonov, Cluny, Malevich, Matyushina, Morgunova, Rozanova, Tatlin, a separate section of the exhibition was devoted to the works of Elena Guro, which in May at age 36, died of leukemia.
December. In the theater of the Luna Park in St. Petersburg put the tragedy Vladimir Mayakovsky in the design Filonova and schoolchildren.
In the same theater later staged opera "Victory over the Sun" (music Matyushina, texts Khlebnikov and Kruchenykh design Malevich). Later Malevich characterize this performance as an important step on its way to Suprematism.
At the exhibition "World of Art" exhibited Altman, Goncharova, Larionov, Tatlin, Yakulov etc.
The main outcome of this year can be regarded as strengthening the vanguard of the vector in painting, expanding it to the related art.
And, although the mass of criticism innovators are still subjected to abuse and ridicule, there are other opinions. Thus one critic wrote in a review of the exhibition "Youth Union": "The audience laughed. Laughed uncontrollably. They laugh because they do not understand. Russian people do a lot of laughter from the defensive misunderstanding.

A black square for the first time appeared in the design of this opera?

Fross, so a detailed answer to your question in the article Yevgeny Kovtun, "Victory Over the Sun" - Beginning of Suprematism "
"Our Heritage", 1989. № 2

And another interesting article by Valery Turchin "Iconography of the Black Square by the light of Theosophy: an icon, symbol, sign."

Incidentally, he noticed a curious continuity: a triangle Kulbin - a square of Malevich.

I have found a solution I've found myself "Chronicle of the Union of Youth. Unfortunately, neither the author nor the source I have not been preserved. But compiled news, albeit in abbreviated form, based on the Department of Manuscripts and RM St. Petersburg Archive of Literature and Art, that is valuable.
In my opinion, the Youth League - a unique organization not only in the history of Russian avant-garde. This association of artists, for whom there was not any artistic idea or concept. (I do not remember another such). The main principle of association was in Novelty, ie It was officially established and registered society of innovators in many different directions. Perhaps it is this principle of association allowed peacefully, and most importantly, a fruitful co-exist in such different masters, as Philo and Malevich, Tatlin and Matyushin, Rozanova, Bubnov, etc. Since CM is quite comfortable collaborated Larionov and Goncharova and brothers Burliuks. Artists joined the company, came out of it, but after some time again to return. Because nowhere else they could find innovative quests such support as the SM.
And the name "Union of Youth" had no relation to the age of the participants. If the footnotes to see the date of birth - the majority of the CM were not at the youth age category. "Young" means to them "a new, growing, growing.
And the very idea of novelty is not haunted our innovators. They are usually signed their policy statements indicating the exact date. And not by chance - to secure a priority (as an invention).
TO SEE absolute merit, in my opinion, should include the fact that they organized the first edition, entirely devoted to the avant-garde art in various fields. They first drew attention to the theater, as the scope of application of its innovative ideas, first started talking about the synthesis of various arts, but who knows what more ...
Hopefully, I've found, will be useful.
