Born in Moscow into a family of music teacher of German origin.
From 1851 to 1856, he studied at the Moscow school of painting and sculpture. From 1856 to 1863 - at the Academy of arts.
Master of genre painting. Painted mostly scenes from peasant life, was often depicted children, sometimes with a touch of sentimentality.
In 1898-1909 gg - Keeper of the art Department of the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg.
